A superior view of the game

Why are baseball & softball backstops needed?

Baseball and softball backstop netting is crucial for ensuring the safety of spectators and players at the ballpark. Without proper barrier netting, foul balls that are hit at high speeds can easily fly into the stands, potentially causing injuries to fans who are not expecting them. This risk is especially significant in today’s game, as players are consistently hitting the ball harder at all playing levels, raising the risk of serious injury from being struck by a foul ball. By installing backstop netting, stadiums, schools, and parks create a safer environment for fans, allowing them to enjoy the game without concern for their safety.

Baseball backstop netting is a critical safety feature, with statistics highlighting its importance in protecting both spectators and players, according to the U.S.

Consumer Product Safety

Commission, thousands of injuries occur each year in baseball stadiums, with a significant number caused by foul balls. In fact, Major League Baseball (MLB) data indicates that more than 1,750 fans are injured annually by foul balls in MLB stadiums alone. The backstop netting effectively mitigates this risk by preventing high-speed foul balls, which can travel up to 100 miles per hour, from reaching the stands.

The two most popular styles of netting backstops

Why netting backstops are superior to chain link options:

Netting backstops offer several significant advantages over traditional chain-link backstops for baseball and softball fields, making them a popular choice for most ballparks these days. One of the key benefits of netting is it provides better visibility for spectators, coaches, and fans. Unlike chain-link fencing, which can obstruct views with its larger number of poles, thicker gauge, and metallic glare, netting backstops allow for an unobstructed, clearer line of sight. Netting, when compared to chain-link wire, can be made of thinner, high-strength materials such as Nylon or Dyneema that are less noticeable, ensuring that fans can see the game more clearly and remain focused without distractions or obstructions.

backstops absorb impact more effectively than chain link fences

Netting is designed to stretch and dissipate the force of a baseball or softball impact, reducing the likelihood of balls ricocheting unpredictably. This creates a safer environment for both players and spectators, as there is less chance of errant balls flying off the backstop at high speeds.
Netting also offers cost and maintenance benefits over chain link fences. Netting is often lighter and easier to install compared to the heavy-duty materials used for chain link fences. This can result in lower initial installation costs, quicker setup times and most importantly, a larger surface-area of protection for a lower price compared to chain-link options.

Moreover, chain-link can become damaged over time, particularly after frequent impacts from fast-moving balls. This wear and tear can lead to bent, rusted, or weakened sections of the fence that require costly repairs or replacements as whole panels of chain-link would have to be replaced to repair a single small section. Netting, on the other hand, tends to be more durable and less prone to physical damage. This is especially true for our products, as exclusively here at Nets of Texas all of our netting is double-treated with a preservative to provide extra protection from frequent impacts as well as the sun’s UV rays. Even if a section of netting becomes worn, it is relatively easy and affordable to replace or repair small areas without requiring the entire backstop to be rebuilt.

Overall, netting backstops provide superior safety, visibility, durability, and cost-effectiveness, making them an ideal choice for modern baseball and softball fields

Different types of
backstops we
provide:

Nets of Texas is built to solve any backstop or barrier netting challenge. We specialize in providing the perfect netting solution for every project, offering a wide range of backstop options to meet your needs.

Canopy Backstops:

A canopy backstop system offers several advantages for sports complexes and stadiums. One of the key benefits is its ability to provide superior protection for spectators by fully covering the bleachers and the area behind the field with netting. The canopy design ensures unobstructed sightlines for fans, enhancing their experience without poles blocking their view. This system is most commonly used in the renovation of ballparks and sports complexes where the existing backstop is not tall enough to provide effective protection.

Suspension Backstop Systems

Our flagship product, the suspension backstop system, features poles that are not aligned with the netting. Instead, the netting is supported by cables that extend beyond the edge of the net to poles positioned outside the sightline of spectators. This design ensures a clearer and more enjoyable viewing experience, as there are no poles obstructing the view. Our innovation in creating this system has established us as industry leaders in the baseball and softball backstop sector.

Inline Backstops:

The classic design, the inline backstop system, combines nets and poles arranged parallel to the baseline and behind home plate. The term “inline” refers to the positioning of the poles, which align with the netting, typically at the corners of the backstop and at the ends of the net. This type of system is used when the poles must be placed in line with the netting due to a lack of space to place them elsewhere. In past years, this was the go-to design for most sport complexes and ballparks, however recently has been surpassed by the groundbreaking innovation of the suspension backstop system.

Chain-link Backstop Netting Extension:

If you already have a chain-link backstop in good condition, one option we offer is our chain-link backstop netting extension system. An original innovation by Nets of Texas, this system is designed to enhance an existing chain-link backstop by adding poles and netting that attaches to the current structure. It’s a cost-effective solution for ballparks where the existing chain-link backstop is not providing adequate coverage.
